The rising unemployment rate is causing not just job loss but also the loss of valuable health insurance coverage for many people. In response, the federal government has enacted new legislation to help with COBRA coverage as well as state aid to families with children.Changes to COBRACOBRA stands for the Consolidated Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1986. Under COBRA, if you worked for a company that had more than 20 employees, then you are able to continue on the group health insurance plan for as much as 18 months. The downside of COBRA is that it can be quite expensive. In most states, recipients report that COBRA payments account for more than 75% of their unemployment benefit. However, under the recently passed Economic Stimulus Package, you could be eligible for assistance with 65% of your COBRA premium. To qualify for the program you must have lost your job between September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009. Your income must be less than $125,000 for an individual and less than $250,000 a year for a family. If you did not take advantage of COBRA initially, you can still sign up for it. If you did sign up for COBRA coverage, you won’t get any money back for the premiums you have already paid, but you will be eligible for assistance from the point after the law has taken effect. Under the new law you will pay 35% of the premium, and the government pays the other 65%. Your assistance could continue for as much as nine months.State Children’s Health Insurance ProgramAnother measure the federal government has taken recently to help people with health insurance coverage is to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program or SCHIP. The law will provide $32 billion to the program over the next five years and expand coverage to from 7 to 11 million children. SCHIP is designed to provide health care coverage for children up to age 19 and pregnant women, in families whose income is low, but not low enough to qualify for Medicaid. A portion of the funding will come from an increase in the tax on cigarettes.Under SCHIP, the federal government provides the states with matching funds to provide health care for families with children. To qualify, families could earn only up to 200% of the poverty level. Under the new law, families can earn up to 300% of the poverty level and still qualify for SCHIP. Each state has set up their program differently, so programs can vary from state to state. If you find yourself out of a job and out of health insurance, two recent measures by the federal government may provide some assistance. The first are changes to the COBRA program in which the government could pick up to 65% of the cost of your health insurance premium. The other is the expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. Either of these options could provide short-term assistance with health insurance coverage for the recently unemployed.

Health food supplements are one of the hottest selling products in the market these days. Their total consumption values billions of dollars in the U.S. alone. Recent surveys show that more than half of the adults in the U.S. consume health food supplements in different forms, such as tablets, capsules, powders, soft gels, gel caps and liquids.
The increased consumption of health food supplements can be attributed to public awareness of health issues and improved standard of living in our society. Many studies have shown that there is a close correlation between health and nutrition. Insufficient supply of nutrients can weaken our body defense mechanism, causing medical problems from common ailments to more severe illnesses in the long term.
There are different types of health food supplements, including macronutrients (amino acids, proteins, essential fatty acids), micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), enzymes (digestive enzymes and antioxidant enzymes), probiotics (beneficial bacteria in the gut), and herbal supplements. These supplements have unique functions in our body. They are either essential for life and good health, modulate our immune system or help with liver detoxification, digestion, mental clarity, etc.
Many people argue that there is no need to consume health food supplements as long as you have a healthy lifestyle and eat a balanced diet. While this may be true, the fact is maintaining a healthy lifestyle and proper diet is difficult to achieve by many people.
Over the past few decades, the green revolution has changed the farming practices over the world. We use more chemical fertilizers, more pesticides to grow the food produce in order to increase harvest and shorten the growth period. As a result, soil nutrients and the population of beneficial soil bacteria are depleted rapidly, and the produce we grow today contain less micronutrient than before.
A stressful lifestyle, improper eating habits, imbalanced diet and increased exposure to chemicals such as environmental pollutants (air, water) and pesticides, drugs, hormones, heavy metals in foods also weaken our body gradually.
Although health food supplements can be beneficial to our health, consumers should still choose the products carefully. Currently, there is little regulation on the quality of health food supplements. Composition of some health food products may not match the label claims and the quality of raw materials and finished products is not guaranteed. Therefore, consumers should only buy from reputable health food manufacturers, read the labels carefully and read more related literatures.
Here are some general rules for buying health food supplements:
1) Supplements made from whole foods, natural sources are better than the synthetic ones. They are more bioactive, can be absorbed readily, and less likely to be contaminated by chemicals such as coal tars used in chemical synthesis.
2) Protein-bonded vitamins and minerals (vitamins and minerals in organic form, binding to amino acids) are more bioactive than the inorganic forms.
3) Buy supplements using safe extraction methods, such as cold pressed extraction or supercritical extraction. This can avoid the harmful residue from chemical extraction.
4) Herbal concentrate and extract are usually more effective than the raw herbs.
5) Organically grown or wild crafted herbs are less likely to be contaminated by heavy metals, pesticides and other chemicals.
6) Read the labels, do not consume more than the recommended dose.
7) Be careful when consuming certain herbal supplements, such as Ma Huang / ephedra, Kava Kava, comfrey, etc. Some studies have shown that these herbs may cause severe side effects to some people. Stop use if unusual signs appear after consumption. 8) Some health food supplements may interact with drugs, either by decreasing or increasing their effects. Consult your doctor if you are currently taking medications.
9) Pregnant and nursing women, people with specific medical conditions such consult the doctors when consuming health food supplements.
10) If in doubt, contact the supplement manufacturers or distributors for more information of their products.
11) Health food supplements are available in many places, such as grocery stores, health food stores, drug stores, pharmacies, supermarkets, department stores, online stores, etc. Be a smart consumer, compare the price and service before purchase.

Women and Stress
Woman is a daughter, a mother, a wife, a worker and many more. She handles several other roles. But there is something that always remains with a woman and that is stress. When we talk about inner peace almost every woman wants it. They want to enjoy every moment in life. But with so much stress in her mind she can never relax. As a result, she suffers from various physical and mental disorders. Since women are much more sensitive than men, they get more stressed out than men do.
There are two types of stress – internal and external. Internal means stress related to household responsibilities. External means stress related to the professional life, which may include the topic of sexual harassment. A working woman suffers from double stress. Stress has a deadly effect on the health of the women and makes her age faster.
There are basically three types of stress defined in medical terms:
Acute stress is the most common form of stress. Symptoms of acute stress include normal headache, irritation, rapid heartbeat and others. But they are treatable.
Episodic acute stress is another type of stress which is visible if a person is suffering from migraines, chest pain, hyper tension and others. It needs a few months to be treated.
Chronic stress is a grinding stress that destroys life. It can gradually lead to heart attack, suicide, violence etc.
Besides this, stress results in sleeplessness, menopause, abnormal bleeding during menstruation, fertility problems etc. It causes difficulty in concentration, short temperedness, disinterest in sex and finally depression.
Women should do something to relieve themselves from stress. If she manages to do this, it will surely impact her personal and professional life positively. These steps should be followed in order to achieve great mental satisfaction.
· You must try to give priority to those tasks which are really important and set aside those that are not too important. This way, you can save a lot of energy.
· You need to take out some time for herself and refresh your body and mind by relaxing them. You need to provide proper nourishment to your body.
· Some women cannot say no to anybody. Try and say no to tasks which you feel that you do not want to handle. This way, you can focus more on important work.
· Meditation can do wonders in reducing stress. It is not too difficult to learn it. You simply need to spend just 5 to 10 minutes everyday. This will provide you with immense peace of mind.
. Try things like writing in a journal everyday, massage, deep breathing, and warm bath and enjoy these experiences.
Relaxation of the body as well as the mind is really important for both men and women. Rather than just doing one task after the other at a stretch, every women should take out some time from her busy schedule for herself and enjoy the life that she is living. Try to find out happiness within a stressful life.

No one seems to like balding men – or at the best they tend to make fun of bald and balding men. Take George Costanza of Seinfeld fame. If that is not bad enough not only that but women as well are often concerned about hair loss and what used to be only called or referred to as “male pattern baldness” as well.
It is a sad fact that most men will start getting bald at some point in their lives. Its not a case of if you will start losing your thick hair and go bald or have somewhat less thickness of hair on your head – it only at what point and time – when you will start to thin out your hair that is on the top of your head .
You can be assured that at some point in your life most men will begin to start going bald. The numbers are estimated that about 25 % of men will begin to lose their hair by the ripe age of 30 years of age and an estimate of a full 65 % by the age of 60. Think about as you age – hairlines that can be best described as progressing towards a “monk’s fringe”, are not totally uncommon if not common indeed in middle aged men currently.
It might all be natural, but does that make all that much difference when the shine of your scalp start showing through that thin wisp of hair that is currently lying across the scalp on the top of your head.
What causes most hair loss in men or what is termed medically as “male pattern baldness”. What causes this condition of “male pattern baldness”? Is it simply a matter of hair wearing out or reaching the end of its lifespan and not being replaced? No , current medical opinion is not that your hair and hair follicles are not “dying out” or simply withering away – reaching the end of their useful life. It appears that a protein , an enzyme of our bodies , called “5-alpha-reductase” “shrinks” and causes your hair follicles to shrink and wither away to the point where they are simply to small and puny to even support a single strand of hair. What is amazing though is that this damaging enzyme does it worst work at the top and front of the head – leaving the hair follicles at the back of the head reasonably ok.
Why is this important? A hair transplant surgeon can “transplant” those good and better hair follicles from the back of your head to the front of your hair restoring your head of hair cosmetically to some degree.
Does it hurt to have hair and hair follicles transplanted? Yes it does to some degree. However it is all done under local anesthetic. Most people who have the procedure done report that generally it’s similar in a way to a visit to the dentist and no more painful than “going to the dentist”.
It all depends on your point of view and concerns about your health and appearance. It now seems that not only are many men concerned about the expanding and continuing loss of the hair on the top of their head but also many women as well. So be it.

Unlike men, women have unique life reasons that can interfere with exercise. These include the birth of a child, marriage, single parenthood, a new job, divorce, overworking, job stress and returning to school. Time is a big consideration. After a day of work and childcare, most women prefer to spend their leisure time in socializing with family and friends, reading and watching television, rather than rushing to the treadmill. Although some of the above-mentioned factors are applicable to men, my experience has shown that women tend to have a harder time to manage exercise on a regular basis.

The benefits of exercise are significant, especially for women. Regular exercise lowers estrogen levels, reduces body fat, and produces a healthier body mass index (BMI). All these factors significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer. Also, women who perceive themselves as having more energy, fewer emotional problems, less pain, fewer social problems and lesser feelings of nervousness and depression are more likely to start exercising. There is a unique exercise and diet method for women that I have developed on my own, and it has helped thousands of clients get results. You can view my clients in action with exercise videos and download full color exercise routines, diet plans and ebooks by registering on my websites mentioned at the end of this article. When starting an exercise program, it is important to remember a few basic principles:

Get descriptions of exercises, with pictures.
Ideally, you want a routine you can print out, take to the gym or use at home. It should include a start and end picture of exercises, with a description of technique. Such exercise charts are available in health clubs and can be found on various websites. Always obtain a routine from a reliable source and ask questions if you don’t understand anything. Perform all exercises in a controlled manner. Never sacrifice control for speed. Breathing is also important. Never hold your breath while exercising. Remember to inhale as you lower a weight or relax and exhale as you raise a weight or exert. In an abdominal crunch, for example, you inhale when coming down and exhale while raising the head and shoulders off the mat.

Don’t do too much too soon.
Don’t do too much, and don’t do too little either. Every individual is different. This means that walking up the stairs may be easy for one individual, but strenuous for someone else. The best way to recognize how hard you’re working is to be aware of your breathing pattern, heart rate and exertion levels. Moderate-intensity activity is going to make you breathe harder than light activity, make your heart beat faster and likely make you sweat a little.

Understand the meaning of moderate.
There is a simple way to understand what’s moderate for you. Light exercise does not result in any noticeable effort. Reading the newspaper is a good example. Light exercise results in noticeable exertion and normal to slightly increased breathing. Walking a dog can be considered light exercise for many individuals. Moderate exercise is slightly vigorous. Gardening, for example, may be associated with deeper breathing to panting and sweating. Finally, hard exercise involves vigorous exertion, gasping and heavy sweating. Think of that aerobics class that’s hard to get through!

Frequency is important!
3-4 days a week of moderate exercise for 30-45 minutes each time. Researchers have found that 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days of the week can reduce the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and colon cancer. It lessens feelings of depression and anxiety, helps build bones and muscles, keeps joints functioning well, and in older women minimizes the risk of falling.

Making the time if it isn’t there!
You don’t have to fit your exercise all into one session or limit yourself to only one exercise. For example, take a brisk 15-minute walk during your coffee break and another post-dinner. Use a bicycle for 15 to 20 minutes. It all adds up. You may find that you can reach an hour a day of moderate-intensity activity more easily than you thought.

If you have not done much exercise lately, start adding physical activity to your life with some simple tips. Park your car further from your destination and walk. Find a group of friends to walk with on weekend mornings. Garden or help in home repairs. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Use hand weights while walking. Vacuum while watching television. Every little bit helps!

Once, society viewed disabled people as dependent, unable to contribute to society. This has changed significantly. Today, disabled persons, particularly women in wheelchairs, have begun to destroy this stigmatized perception with amazing accomplishments. Furthermore, manufacturers have developed designer chairs to accent the incredible beauty and strength of these women.

Last year, New York designers held a fashion show specifically directed to display these chairs. The show was hosted by four women who founded Discovery For Design, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of women who rely on wheelchairs. One of these women, Marilyn Hamilton, is the co-inventor of the Quickie wheelchair. The other three were sports, arts, and business dynamos who experienced traumatic injuries and landed in wheelchairs.

This fashion show was dedicated not only to stylish wheelchairs, but also to fashionably designed clothing ensembles specifically created to flatter women who spend a significant amount of time in wheelchairs. The “Roll” Models were four women selected from across the country who had become disabled and demonstrated inspirational strength and perseverance despite their health problems or accidents.

One of these fascinating women, Jenny Smith, experienced an accident while practicing gymnastics. Her spinal cord injury, which occurred 17 years ago, has not prevented her from driving, graduating college with a Master’s Degree in Psychology, or working for the Mobility Project, which has delivered over 1000 wheelchairs to disabled people in developing countries.

In comparison, Melissa Holley was working her way through college when an auto accident resulted in her spinal cord injury. She has spoken, attended fundraising events, and campaigned to bring an experimental spinal cord treatment procedure to the United States. She has not allowed her wheelchair to disable her life.

Michele Boardman is a young woman diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. She was confined to a wheelchair by age 12. Despite this, she fulfilled her dream of attending college and plans to become a pediatric genetic counselor. She was one of nine youths throughout the world honored by the Yes I Can! Foundation in 2004.

The fourth model, Rosemary Rosetti, is a successful woman whose life was detoured by the falling of a huge tree that crushed her spinal cord during a bicycle ride. After her recovery, she began to travel the world discussing her journey in living life actively in a wheelchair. She has published a book on this topic, and was recently crowned Ms. Wheelchair America.

These women are a tribute to the amazing strength and beautiful journey of which women in wheelchairs are capable. Their story is truly an inspiration to us all.

From puberty to menopause and beyond, the skincare needs of women change drastically over our lifetime. In this article, I discuss many of the main skin care concerns and precautions that are necessary to maintain healthy, beautiful skin at any age.  Just find the decade in which you fall to see what steps to better skin you need to take today to have better skin tomorrow.

Women in their 20’s: Hydration & Protection-For this decade of your life, your skin is the most resilient that it will ever be.  To ensure that you have beautiful skin many years from now, it is important to take care of it.  Hydration is the first step; you should begin to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day, every day.  This will combat the signs of aging from the late night partying, late night studying, or just staying up late that many of us do when we are young.  This also helps flush the system of excess alcohol or control breakouts from any nagging signs of teenage acne.  The second step is protection; this is a two-prong step that includes internal as well as external protection.  In terms of internal protection, you should begin to take a well-balanced daily vitamin that will promote healthy skin and overall health by providing essential nutrients that you may not be getting in your daily diet.  Check with your doctor to get the best one for you.  For external protection, using a moisturizer with a SPF of at least 15 everyday, no matter the season, will reduce the amount of fine lines and wrinkles you get as you age.

Women in their 30’s: Prevention-This is the decade in most women’s lives when many life changes occur, such as marriage, children, career changes, etc.  This inevitably means more stress on the skin and more stress can mean rapid aging.  So in this decade, prevention is the number one step.  To that end, finding a good skin care regimen that works well with your lifestyle is important.  You want skincare that will combat any visible signs of aging that you already have as well as prevent any further signs of aging.  Another way to prevent many unwanted signs of aging is to improve your diet by adding in more fresh fruits and vegetables.  As with women in their 20’s, you should still be continuing to drink water to hydrate your skin.

Women in their 40’s: Treatment-When many women turn 40, their mentality not only changes, but also their skin.  Many times women’s skin will begin to breakout again or they will develop a skin condition that they have never had in the past.  For this very tricky decade of life, treatment is the weapon of choice.  A visit to the dermatologist is highly recommended to treat any skin conditions that may have developed and get your skin back into the great condition that it once was in.  Hydration, once again, will help you overcome any road blocks on your quest to maintain beautiful skin.

Women in their 50’s and Beyond: Nourishment-In this time of many women’s lives, the loss of skin elasticity, moisture, and tone is very evident.  When these signs begin to emerge, it is time to nourish your skin to keep it supple and to help it retain moisture.  You will want to avoid any type of caffeine or skin depleting activities (this means coffees, sodas, alcohol, and smoking are out!) as these will speed up signs of aging.  Look for products that cater to mature skin and will help it regain its youth.  More than any time in your life, hydration is important for your skin retaining moisture and a healthy natural glow.

No matter if you are in your 20’s or in your 70’s, you can have beautiful skin at any age with a few steps taken on your part to address your skin’s current state of being.  It is never too late to start, so begin today to have healthy, beautiful, vibrant skin tomorrow.

When it comes to Heart Disease, men usually come off worse than women. It seems that men have a much higher chance of developing the condition than women do though that is not to say that women do not develop the condition. They do, though most women who suffer form the condition are over a certain age.

Women and Heart Disease

It is thought that in America there are eight million women living with Heart Disease and of those it is estimated that just over 400,000 women have heart attacks each year. The condition is in fact one of the most deadly and it is one of the biggest killers of women each year.

As mentioned the age of the woman does seem to make a difference. Once a woman has been through the menopause, the chances of her developing Heart Disease rise dramatically. Whilst men do have the highest chance of developing the condition, if they do have Heart Disease and if they suffer a heart attack, the chances of them recovering are a lot better than if a woman suffering from the same condition had a heart attack.

In fact, it seems that Heart Disease in women is actually a lot more fatal than Heart Disease in men. As for how the condition develops, it is slightly different to how it develops within males.

In males the disease tends to develop in the main, larger coronary arteries, but with women it tends to develop in the smaller arteries. This could be the reason why there are more fatalities in women than in men. It seems that a complete lack of understanding does not help many women as they believe it will not affect them and if it does it is not particularly serious. So, just what can be done?

Well firstly women need to start taking care of themselves more. Smoking, eating unhealthily and a lack of exercise will not help so you need to choose a healthier lifestyle. Also, low cholesterol level needs to be kept so ensure that you have regular check ups with the doctor just to be sure!

Overall Heart Disease in women is a big problem despite people’s lack of knowledge on the subject. Women do need to start thinking of their health and by choosing a healthier lifestyle they will be contributing towards preventing the condition. So, whilst Heart Disease tends to affect more men, it still affects women and it is often more deadly in women too.
