I didn’t really know what to expect other than what I had read on the Women’s Small Business Expo web site http://www.womenssmallbusinessexpo.com and what Linda Hollander, the founder, had conveyed to me during my first women networking event in Beverly Hills about two months ago. In short, it was phenomenal! I’m glad I attended the 3-day seminar in Palms Springs, CA at the end of April 2004. First, I really didn’t think I was going to go given the fact that most of my time and money were dedicated to my company, which I officially registered about 4 months ago. In fact, because my business was just born, it actually made sense for me to attend. It was my first business seminar ever. So far, I’ve mainly seen and heard from my husband how he thinks business should be done, but I have a complete different view. Consequently, you really can’t discuss your visions with someone who doesn’t share your approach on how to do business. As a result you start doubting yourself after a while, right? You start doubting yourself because you don’t know any more than what lies within the barriers of your daily environment. You can’t really know anything different unless you get to taste a glimpse what lies beyond those barriers. No one is going to break those barriers for you. You have to do it yourself. So I did. There were approximately 10 speakers present, talking about strategies in marketing, power networking, risk taking, financing, success, internet, media approaches, and getting your product on the market. The overall feel of this 3- day seminar surprised me. I expected some boring lectures on business, but instead the speakers had filled the room with an unspeakable energy and vibe. 200 women were captured by the words of extremely motivated and inspirational speakers. It was unbelievable! I profited the most from the Women’s Small Business Expo to see how other women think, feel, talk and go about business. I was so happy to see that in fact my attitude and approach to business wasn’t that far off from other successful women. In truth, I’m rather proud of myself considering how quickly I had built my own firm and product while others were still talking about what they were going to do. My doubts had all of a sudden disappeared, and were replaced with confidence and heightened self-esteem, motivation and the urge to move on. I met a group of people who shared my vision, a group of women who thought like I did. In summary, I would definitely recommend Linda Hollander’s Women’s Small Business Expo if you need a touch of confidence, motivation and inspiration on a level that encompasses the mind, body and spirit. You are not only setting up amazing business relationships, but you will also find friendship. Part of the seminar was to create a success team with people who you connected with over these three days. You will talk to your success team on a weekly bases to support each other in reaching everyone’s business goal and get to the next level. As we all know so well, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It was a fantastic experience and it took me a whole day to settle back into reality after four days in Palms Springs amongst all these amazing women I had met during that venture. I had just spent an hour with my trainer Rusty lifting weights, run 35 minutes on the treadmill, taken my Dalmatian Lucy for a vigorous 40-minute walk, and then driven to the YMCA for an hour-long stretch class. Exhausted, I had to ask why exercise was ruling my life.

I feel better when I exercise, I rationalized. Taking a deep breath, I delved deeper and as I did, I began to see that my obsession with exercise was rooted more in vanity than any health benefits I hoped to receive. I had to admit that the primary reason I work out is to look good. The way I view my body determines in good part my self-esteem.

Self-esteem is the sum total of how much we like and approve of our self-concept; Webster’s Dictionary defines it simply as “self-respect.” In America these days, how much we respect ourselves may hinge in large part on how we look. Some psychologists claim most people’s body image is so bad that having a bad body image is “normal.” According to the American Psychological Association, 30 to 40 percent of Americans are somewhat unhappy with their appearance, and another 45 percent may experience anxiety or depression because they dislike their appearance.

In an era of gender equality, Americans’ obsession with body image is almost equally divided among the sexes. One body-image study found that 55 percent of all women were dissatisfied with their physiques, followed closely by men at 45 percent.

So how can we feel better about our bodies and bolster our sagging self-esteem? I went to the Internet for answers and my research yielded these five suggestions.

ONE: Quit dissecting your body. People generally look at some small part of the body they don’t like and stake everything on it. FIVE: Focus on who you are, not how you look. Acknowledge the whole you and not just your body. What are your talents, gifts and dreams? Think of all the lives you have touched. Create a feel-good box. Find a box or basket (I have a file) and every time someone gives you a compliment write it down on a piece of paper and drop it in. My file includes notes of appreciation as well as gift cards. And when I am feeling blue, I revisit it.

As I thought more about my body image, I came to realize that for the most part I like my body. Looking around me, most people I know don’t look like the models on the covers of Vogue and Men’s Health. They are real people like me. I have been working out not for me, but for an ideal that I can never, and really don’t want to, meet.

Like most things in life, I have come to realize that the motivation for working out is as important as the act itself. Recently there has been talk by the FDA of fortifying grains with folate (as is already done with the B vitamins thiamine, riboflavin and niacin). Adding folate to breads and pastas would boost your folate intake by an estimated 30 to 70 percent. As we wait for this to take place, try to eat good sources of folate daily. Sources of folate include: leafy greens, citrus fruits. A 6-ounce glass of orange juice contains 120 micrograms of folate. Folate can be lost from foods during preparation, cooking, or storage.

Serve fruits and vegetables raw whenever possible.

Steam, boil, or simmer vegetables in a minimal amount of water.

Store vegetables in the refrigerator.
